(Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Sunday that he had reached a significant agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the training of Ukrainian pilots. During his nightly video address, Zelenskiy expressed his satisfaction with the strengthening of their coalition of modern fighters.
Although Zelenskiy did not provide specific details about the nature of the training, it is worth noting that France does not possess F-16 fighter jets, which Ukraine has recently been promised by Denmark and the Netherlands. Nonetheless, France does possess French-made Rafale warplanes and previous-generation Mirage 2000 jets.
In addition to discussing pilot training, Zelenskiy shared that he and Macron deliberated on potential French assistance in safeguarding the Ukrainian city and region of Odesa. This region plays a crucial role in grain exports for Ukraine, but Zelenskiy did not delve into the specifics of the assistance discussed.
The French foreign ministry had previously expressed its commitment to reinforcing military support for Ukraine, particularly in enhancing air defense capabilities. The agreement between Zelenskiy and Macron could be seen as a continuation of this commitment.
