KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made a visit to troops battling in the northeast region of Ukraine on Tuesday and engaged in discussions with commanders about the ongoing situation in one of the most intense fronts of the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskiy did not reveal the exact location of his visit but mentioned that he met with brigades fighting in the Kupiansk-Lyman sector in the northeast, which is reportedly under attack by Russian forces according to the Ukrainian military.
Using Z, formerly known as Twitter, Zelenskiy stated, “We met with brigade and battalion commanders to discuss the battlefield situation, pressing issues, and needs,” alongside sharing photographs of his meeting with soldiers in a dimly lit room.
He further added, “Each of our combat brigades, together with every soldier who drives the occupiers back with every step forward, are ensuring the inevitable victory of Ukraine. They are the strength. I express my gratitude for their service!”
The president’s office also uploaded video footage that showcased Zelenskiy shaking hands with troops, sitting at a long table with commanders, and receiving briefings from an officer while standing in front of a map.
Zelenskiy, who has been consistently visiting troops since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, also distributed awards as a token of appreciation.
Expressing gratitude for their service, he encouraged them to maintain “the motivation with which you so firmly defend the sovereignty of our state and the future of our generations.”
Despite criticisms from abroad regarding the military strategy, Zelenskiy has rejected claims that Kyiv’s counteroffensive in the east and south over the past four months has been hindered by poor planning.
