In a disappointing turn of events, men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia was eliminated from the Swiss Open after a defeat to India’s K. Srikanth in the second round on Thursday (March 21).
The current world No. 10 suffered a surprising loss of 16-21, 15-21 to his Indian counterpart, who is ranked at No. 27 in the world, in Basel.
This defeat marked Zii Jia’s second loss to Srikanth in six meetings, with their first encounter resulting in a defeat for Zii Jia in the 2022 Japan Open.
However, there was a silver lining for men’s doubles pair Choong Hon Jian and Mohd Haikal Nazri, the winners of the Orleans Masters, as they advanced to the quarter-finals with a victory over Thailand’s Pharanyu Kaosamaang and Worrapol Thongsanga, securing a 21-12, 21-17 win.
The duo will face Indonesia’s Sabar Gutama and Moh Reza in the next round, a rematch from their recent encounter in the Orleans tourney final.
Additionally, mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, as well as Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, also progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei are set to compete against Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran in their next match, while Soon Huat and Shevon will take on Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje.
