KOTA KINABALU: Ten teenage boys have been arrested by the police in connection with a viral video clip depicting a group of secondary school students bullying their schoolmates in Ranau.
Initial investigations have revealed that the group physically assaulted their schoolmates by slapping, punching, and kicking them. The victims had caused problems by vaping in the school dormitory.
According to Ranau OCPD Deputy Supt Simiun Lomudin, the incident took place on August 3, but the video clip began circulating widely on social media on Friday.
“It is believed that the group attacked their schoolmates out of frustration with them for vaping, as it had caused trouble for other students residing in the hostel,” he explained when contacted yesterday.
Five boys were apprehended on Friday and the remaining were apprehended yesterday. Their ages range between 15 and 17.
Once investigations are concluded, all of them will be released on bail. The case is currently being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
A police report regarding the incident was filed at 3:30 pm on Friday.
The five-minute clip shows at least four boys being slapped and punched by a group of boys surrounding them.
