JAKARTA: A ship carrying 11 crew members reportedly sank on Monday (July 31) after experiencing a leakage caused by large waves in the waters of the Malacca Strait.
Budi Cahyadi, the head of the Pekanbaru rescue agency, stated that the ship, named KM Lintang Timur Samudera, was en route from Tanjung Balai Asahan to Malaysia.
“The ship suffered a leakage due to being struck by massive waves at the ‘one fathom bank’,” he mentioned in a statement.
The rescue agency collaborated with other rescue agencies, including those in Medan, the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) in Dumai, and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
The ship’s last known location was at coordinates 02°56’740″N 100°52’692″E, which lies within the Exclusive Economic Zone, according to Bernama.
