MERSING: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained eleven foreign fishermen on suspicion of drug use. The incident took place during a border patrol operation in Mersing waters at 11.35pm on Wednesday (March 27). Maritime Cmdr Suhaizan Saadin, the director of Mersing zone MMEA, revealed that the suspects were on a boat when the enforcement officials approached them.

The detained individuals, comprising six from Laos, three from Indonesia, and two from Cambodia, tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine in urine tests. The suspects, aged between 22 and 43, were taken to the Mersing zone maritime office for further investigation under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Suhaizan emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of maritime activities. In addition to the eleven detainees, 45 other fishermen from 20 fishing boats were tested negative for drugs during the operation.

If anyone has information regarding illegal activities, they are encouraged to report to the authorities through MERS999 or contact the Johor maritime operations centre at 07-219 9404.
