KUALA LUMPUR: According to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, around 800 houses of various sizes will be built in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Penang as part of the Madani Inclusive Housing project. This project aims to accommodate people from different income groups. Anwar expressed confidence in achieving the target of constructing 500,000 affordable houses under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) with the collaboration of the private and public sectors.
Anwar emphasized that the government is committed to addressing housing issues and making it a top priority. He acknowledged that the high prices of houses and rental rates have become a burden for the people. Anwar also mentioned that as of the end of 2022, a total of 108,373 affordable housing units have already been built.
In addition to the construction of new houses, Anwar highlighted the importance of improving public housing. He proposed a shift from the concept of ownership to the concept of residence, aiming to enhance the quality and accessibility of public housing. To enable more individuals from targeted groups to own homes, Anwar stated that the rent-to-own scheme would be expanded. He also mentioned the expansion of the initiative for renting houses in urban areas for those who cannot afford to buy a house, which has already been implemented in Johor and Selangor.
During the presentation of the 12MP in September 2021, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob outlined plans to build 500,000 affordable housing units. He also mentioned improvements to home financing, including the Fund for Affordable Housing, Youth Housing Scheme, and Rent-to-Own Program (RTO), with the aim of facilitating home ownership for more individuals from the B40 and M40 groups.
