A tragic incident occurred in Keningau when a 17-year-old girl, Juliana Gabriel, drowned after slipping into a river while washing clothes at the riverbank on Wednesday.
Rescuers found Juliana’s body about 10 feet from the spot where she fell into Sungai Ansip.
The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 6.12pm after a witness saw the incident and reported it.
A team from Keningau Fire and Rescue station arrived at the scene to conduct a search, both on the surface and underwater where Juliana disappeared.
Juliana’s body was discovered at a depth of 10 feet in the river, and she was confirmed deceased by the police at the location.
The police took custody of Juliana’s body for further procedures, and the operation concluded at 9.20pm, as reported by the department spokesperson.
