In Perak, 258 school cooperatives have been registered, with a membership of 36,917 individuals, according to Salbiah Mohamed, the state Women, Family, Social Welfare, Cooperative and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman. These school cooperatives generated a total revenue of RM26.54 million in the previous year. Salbiah emphasized that the school cooperatives contribute to the state’s economic growth. She made these comments during a media conference held on September 21, following the launch of the state-level Young Entrepreneurs Strive for Success (YESS) program in Ipoh.
Salbiah further stressed the importance of utilizing social media networks as an effective marketing and promotional strategy for school cooperatives to sell their products. She commended the innovative products developed by the students, such as compost fertilizer made from discarded items. Salbiah suggested that these products could be marketed in stores selling various farming equipment. Additionally, she encouraged school cooperatives to seek marketing assistance from existing entrepreneurial agencies.
Salbiah proposed expanding the YESS program to all districts in the state. She emphasized that the exposure provided by the YESS competition should not only benefit potential school cooperatives but also educate students about the field of entrepreneurship. SMK Aminuddin Baki Chemor Bhd was awarded the Best Project Award in the competition and received RM3,000 cash, a trophy, and a certificate of participation. The school will now participate in the YESS convention at the national level in December. The competition was organized by the Malaysia Cooperative Societies Commission of Perak in collaboration with the Education Ministry.
