JOHOR BARU: As of the first day of campaigning in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections, a total of 28 reports have been lodged, including four cases involving 3R issues (race, religion, and royalty), according to Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, the Johor police chief. The majority of the cases center around damaging campaign materials such as party flags, banners, and posters. Comm Kamarul Zaman stated that the police have received four cases involving 3R, with two cases under investigation by Johor and the remaining two by Bukit Aman. He made these remarks during his visit to an early polling center at the Marine Police Region II headquarters in Tampoi on Tuesday, September 5.
Among the four cases reported, two involve PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for questioning the Pardons Board authorization and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for issuing a “fatwa” stating that voting for Pakatan Harapan’s Pulai candidate Suhaizan Kayat is haram (forbidden).
Comm Kamarul Zaman stated that the early voting process is proceeding smoothly at the two early voting centers located at the Marine Police Region II headquarters and Kempas police station. A total of 927 police personnel are eligible to cast their votes as early voters for the Pulai Parliamentary by-election. The Pulai by-election is one of two by-elections held in Johor following the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23, who was also the domestic trade and cost of living minister. The other by-election is for the Simpang Jeram state seat.
However, early voting will not take place for the Simpang Jeram by-election. The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled polling for both constituencies on Saturday, September 9, after the campaigning period, which began on August 26, ends at 11.59pm on September 8.
