SEPANG: The Malaysian government plans to build over 3,000 solar-powered trading kiosks nationwide by the end of this year. The aim of the project, called MyKiosk, is to regulate and legalize unlicensed petty traders while boosting the economy.

The Local Government Development Minister, Nga Kor Ming, has allocated a total of RM50mil (approximately $11.9 million) for the project. Out of that amount, RM49.14mil has been earmarked for 3,173 kiosks under 113 local authorities so far.

Currently, 100 kiosks have already been completed in five locations. Priority will be given to applicants in the B40 category and traders who are being relocated to a safer and strategic location,” said Nga after launching 20 kiosks in Taman Putra Perdana on July 28.

Under the MyKiosk project, rentals will not exceed RM300 ($71) per month, and the charges will be waived for the first six months. Additionally, the kiosks can operate at night, allowing for long operational hours and potentially better income for traders.

Moreover, the kiosks are solar-powered, meaning there will be no electricity bills, thereby saving operating costs. Nga believes that this initiative will have a significant impact on improving the economy of the traders.

The 20 kiosks launched in Taman Putra Perdana mark the first batch of MyKiosks launched in the country. The nature of business at each kiosk may vary depending on the approval of the local authority.

Notably, Selangor caretaker local government and public transportation committee chairman Ng Sze Han and Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) President Abd Hamid Hussain were also present at the launch.

Abd Hamid expressed gratitude to the ministry for approving the first phase of the MyKiosk project. He also announced that the second phase, consisting of 15 kiosks, has been approved for another location in Taman Putra Perdana.
