IPOH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has confiscated 31 sets of fish traps known as “bubu naga” about 1.1 nautical miles east of Pulau Talang, near Pantai Remis in Manjung.
Mohd Hambali Ya’akup, director of Perak MMEA, stated that the patrol team discovered the traps during an operation in Perak waters on Sunday (Oct 22) around 5pm.
“We came across suspicious white buoys tied to wooden stakes in the water,” he said on Monday (Oct 23). “Upon investigation, we found that the buoys marked the locations of the traps which had been set by irresponsible individuals or groups. The traps were then brought back to the Kampung Acheh jetty and handed over to the investigative team.”
Mohd Hambali emphasized that these traps are prohibited due to their potential to catch juvenile fish and prawns, which could harm marine biodiversity and deplete marine resources. The owners of these traps can be charged under Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act for using banned fishing methods.
“To discourage the use of these traps, we will continue to monitor and gather intelligence,” he added. “We urge the maritime community to assist us by reporting any violations of the law at sea. Reports, complaints, and emergency calls can be made to the 999 emergency response line or the state maritime operations center at 05-683 8737.”
