PETALING JAYA: 34 rest and service (R&R) stops along PLUS highways will be decorated in a Merdeka theme for National Day and Malaysia Day. The decorations are part of a competition organized by PLUS, with the aim of promoting patriotism and unity among highway users. The competition, which has been held since 2002, will involve 34 R&Rs, including lay-bys and restaurants along PLUS Highway and East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2).
Participants in the competition will decorate their premises using recycled materials aligned with the Merdeka theme. The competition will run until Malaysia Day on Sept 16. The winning R&R will receive a cash prize of up to RM10,000, while the first and second runners-up will be awarded RM8,000 and RM6,000 respectively. The fourth and fifth-placed stops will receive RM5,000 and RM4,000, and a special award winner will get RM2,000.
PLUS managing director, Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar, said that besides taking a break at the rest stops, highway users can also experience the excitement of National Month celebrations. Furthermore, the PLUS headquarters will display a large Jalur Gemilang measuring 12.2m by 13.4m. Additionally, several PLUS toll plazas will be adorned with the Jalur Gemilang.
PLUS is also organizing a photo contest where social media users can upload photos of themselves with a Jalur Gemilang or Merdeka-themed decorations at safe locations along PLUS or LPT2 highways. Participants are encouraged to include a creative caption for a chance to win prizes.
Nik Airina expressed the hope that the National Month celebrations will promote unity and patriotism among Malaysians. She emphasized that it is not only a time to celebrate independence and Malaysia Day but also an opportunity for people to show their pride in being Anak Malaysia.
