KUALA LUMPUR: One government backbencher has suggested that individuals who promote race, religion, or royalty (3R) issues should be arrested, detained for three days, and charged. “On the 3R issue, I would like to propose that if there is a police report, those who play up 3R issues should be arrested for three days and investigated,” stated Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat). He added, “Arrest them straight away, throw them (behind bars) for three days and if there is a need, charge them.” Mohd Sany emphasized that there could be no compromises when it comes to 3R issues.
In response, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Haji Nasarah explained that there are legal procedures in place to address such cases. “We are committed to upholding the freedom of speech,” he declared during his winding up speech on the 12th Malaysia Plan mid-term review in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Sept 18). He assured that the police would take action against individuals who violate the law, regardless of their background or status. “Break the law and action will be taken. To avoid action from being taken… comply with existing laws,” he advised.
Recently, the police have obtained statements from various Opposition leaders regarding their 3R-related comments. On July 18, caretaker Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was charged under the Sedition Act in the Selayang Sessions Courts for a political speech delivered on July 11. Muhammad Sanusi is accused of making remarks that could incite disloyalty against the Rulers.
