PETALING JAYA: According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), individuals convicted of spreading content containing elements related to race, religion, and royalty (3R) have been collectively fined RM43,000 by the courts. The MCMC has reported receiving 100 complaints regarding content suspected of containing sensitive elements from 2018 to June 30. Out of these cases, nine have been filed in court.
The MCMC stated, “Eight of the cases resulted in guilty pleas, with the individuals involved being fined a total of RM43,000, while another case is currently on trial.” Additionally, two cases received fines totaling RM7,000, and warnings were issued for three other cases. Four cases are still under investigation, while the remaining 82 have been classified as ‘No Further Action’ or ‘No Offence Disclosed’ after a thorough review.
As stated by the MCMC, all the complaints are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The cases involving religion accounted for 40, followed by 34 cases concerning royalty, and 26 cases relating to race. The MCMC has called upon the public to report any instances suspected of inciting the 3R.
As the state polls in Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu scheduled for August 12 approach, the MCMC has emphasized that no social media content containing 3R issues has been found thus far. The MCMC, in collaboration with the police, has pledged to remain vigilant and take strict action against those who touch upon these sensitive elements. The government will not tolerate any instigation of hatred that could incite fear, panic, or disharmony in the country.
