BANTING: The Communications and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, has announced that 99.87% of populated areas in Selangor now have 4G mobile broadband coverage. This achievement is a result of the first phase of the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela), which has also delivered high speeds of up to 55.96 Mbps. To further improve coverage, 17 new telecommunication towers are slated for completion by the end of this year, although it has been revealed that eight of the 11 recently completed towers are not yet active.
In response to this, Fahmi intends to inspect one of the inactive towers personally and urged for immediate action to activate all eight of them. Speaking at the “Day with Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) Community” programme in Kanchong Darat, Fahmi shared that 8,457 transmitter stations have already been upgraded to 4G network, with just 19 stations remaining in the implementation stage.
Fahmi also expressed his intention to meet with telecommunication service providers to discuss promoting the prepaid and broadband unity packages introduced by the ministry. He reminded them of the packages announced in February and March and promised to question the telco CEOs if the benefits are not adequately publicized.
The Communications and Digital Ministry has also introduced the Mobile Internet Prepaid Unity Package, known as Unity Package, priced at RM30. Additionally, 28 fibreoptic Point of Presence (PoP) facilities have been completed, with 2,912 premises ready for subscription, to expand the broadband network coverage.
In Selangor, 226 PoP initiatives are planned for development, with 52 under the first phase and 174 more to be implemented under the second phase. Fahmi also highlighted the “Saya Digital” program, which has benefitted over 16,081 participants nationwide, including 3,195 people in Selangor, in the past two years. The program aims to increase digital skills among the B40 group, senior citizens, and students, and has organized awareness events in almost 40 locations, including five in Selangor. – Bernama
