50,000ha of land has been identified in Sabah and Sarawak for rice planting, according to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Deputy Prime Minister. He mentioned that Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed in principle, but implementation will take some time. The allocation issued by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry needs to be coordinated with the Sarawak Modernisation of Agriculture Ministry, and the consent of the landowner is required, especially when it involves customary land.
Ahmad Zahid stated, “The type of padi to be planted will depend on the suitability of the land in Sabah and Sarawak. Although the cost may be quite high, ensuring self-sufficiency in rice supply is crucial.” He made these comments after the Santuni Rakyat programme at SK Haji Bujang, Sebangan. Also present at the event were his deputy, Datuk Rubiah Wang, and Sarawak Utilities and Communications Minister, Datuk Julaihi Narawi.
Ahmad Zahid emphasized that residents in rural and interior areas, particularly in Sarawak, with a rural population of about 1.4 million, should be given priority for any development project. He stated, “Since Sarawak has been independent for 60 years, it is the responsibility of both the federal and state governments to develop rural and interior areas.”
During the event, Ahmad Zahid also announced a RM10mil allocation for the construction of a Giat Mara Centre in Sebangan this year. – Bernama
