KOTA KINABALU: A seven-year-old boy is missing and feared drowned after the boat he was in with family members capsized in Sandakan waters on Tuesday (Aug 1).
Authorities comprising the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the Fire and Rescue Department, marine police and Civil Defence Force assisted by local fishermen, mounted a search and rescue (SAR) operation at 4pm.
Romy Azlan was on a boat that took off from Pulau Timbang jetty and headed towards Kampung Mumiang with four adult passengers and another child, when the vessel is believed to have hit a floating object, causing it to capsize at 0.2 nautical miles from Tanjung Batu around 2.30pm.
The five other passengers were rescued but the victim could not be traced, according to a Fire and Rescue spokesman.
Romy was last seen wearing an orange shirt and black pants.
Sandakan MMEA director Maritime Capt Zainudin Mohd Zuki urged those with information to contact the Sandakan maritime operation centre at
089-229 504 or state maritime operation centre at 088-387 774.
The SAR was postponed at 6.30pm and will be resumed on Wednesday (Aug 2) morning.
