KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 80 Malaysian companies achieved sales amounting to RM1.49bil at the prestigious Gulfood 2024, the world’s largest food exhibition held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from Feb 19-23, 2024. This marked a 57.9% increase from the RM943.46mi recorded in 2023, as reported by Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, chairman of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).

The noteworthy surge in sales was attributed to the increased participation of Malaysian companies, which grew from 71 to 80, along with the adoption of a longer exhibition period from four days to five days. Out of the total sales amount, RM579.1mil were actual sales, while RM916.75mil were identified as potential sales, Reezal Merican informed Bernama.

Reezal Merican expressed pride in the ability of Malaysian companies to expand their exports and penetrate global markets through platforms like Gulfood. Particularly gratifying was the substantial involvement of micro, small, and medium enterprises, with a majority being bumiputra companies. Matrade committed to closely monitoring the sales progress monthly to facilitate the realization of potential sales worth RM916.75mil.

In addition to the private sector representatives, five government agencies participated in the delegation to Dubai, namely the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Malaysian Palm Oil Council, SME Bank, and Selangor State Development Corporation. Palm oil products led the sales at RM877.50mil, followed by beverages at RM289.9mil, among other product categories.

Throughout the event, Malaysian exhibitors engaged in 10,622 business matching sessions with importers and distributors from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and beyond. Gulfood 2024 served as a crucial platform for Malaysian companies to scout and foster export opportunities, collaborations, and product showcase in the global market.
