A secondary school in Kota Marudu district in Sabah found a creative way to celebrate National Day and Malaysia Day. Teachers and students from SMK Bandau, located about 130km from Kota Kinabalu, used different parts of maize to create a beautifully crafted replica of the Malaysia Madani logo. The waste parts of maize, including the stalk, corn husks, silk, and tassel, were repurposed for this project. The government had chosen the logo as the official emblem for this year’s National Day and Malaysia Day festivities.

The project was carried out by Scholastica Dalius, along with her students Redlye Aloysius, Razman Makri, Alex Zander Welfred, and Daniel Mikol. Another teacher, Yusri Yulizar, also contributed to the project. The initial idea came from teacher Irene Jokilyn, and they used equipment provided by teacher Liew Yun Chin. The collaboration between the teachers, students, and staff of the school, as well as the support from the Parent-Teacher Association and school cleaners, made this project possible.

The team completed the replica in less than 12 hours, working over a weekend in early August, just in time for the Kota Marudu leg of the 2023 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy. According to Scholastica, people were impressed when they saw the finished work. When asked about the choice of maize, Scholastica explained that corn is synonymous with Kota Marudu, a region known for being one of the largest producers of maize on the Sabah west coast. Corn husks were used for the red and white stripes of the logo, while the blue part was made from the stalks. The tassels and corn silk were utilized to create the yellow star and crescent moon symbols.

Scholastica also expressed her appreciation for the dedication and hard work of her students who were willing to sacrifice their time and energy to complete the replica. She also thanked her colleagues for their involvement in the project, even though it took place during their usual family time. She said this demonstrated their deep sense of patriotism.
