JOHOR BARU: Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the ruler of Johor, is known for his outspokenness and concern for the welfare of his subjects. Since taking the throne in 2010, Sultan Ibrahim has not hesitated to express his opinions and dissatisfaction on various issues. This includes reprimanding politicians who sow discord among the people. One notable incident occurred in 2017 when the Sultan ordered a launderette in Muar to stop its discriminatory practice, which only allowed Muslims to use its facilities, or face closure at the hands of the Ruler himself. He has also criticized a former Cabinet minister for giving a political speech at a mosque, emphasizing that mosques should be free from political elements.

In addition to his vocal nature, Sultan Ibrahim utilizes social media, specifically Facebook, where he has over 1.1 million followers. He frequently shares his thoughts and comments on topics such as cleanliness and environmental issues. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he urged his subjects to remain calm and follow the guidelines provided by the Health Ministry. The Sultan also called for unity in curbing the spread of the virus and combating fake news. He directed teachers to get vaccinated to prevent transmission to their students.

Another key aspect of Sultan Ibrahim’s reign is his belief in promoting racial unity through the concept of Bangsa Johor. He seeks input from representatives of various ethnic groups in the state through his annual expedition, Kembara Mahkota Johor. Despite his firmness on certain matters, Sultan Ibrahim is known for his compassion and is highly regarded by his subjects. Many describe him as warm-hearted, congenial, and possessing a good sense of humor.

His compassionate side is evident in moments when Sultan Ibrahim becomes emotional while listening to stories of pain and suffering. This was observed when he promptly instructed the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) to open its royal ward for patients displaced by a tragic fire in 2016. Similarly, during the Sungai Kim Kim chemical pollution crisis in Pasir Gudang in 2019, the Johor royal family visited victims at hospitals and provided assistance. Even while abroad, Sultan Ibrahim maintained constant communication with the state government and personally involved his foundation in flood relief efforts.

The Sultan Ibrahim Johor Foundation has contributed more than RM170 million in aid, including provision of 103,000 tents, to those affected by floods in Johor and other states. Sultan Ibrahim and Johor Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah have consistently prioritized the welfare of the people and generously assisted Johoreans during the Covid-19 pandemic.
