MARANG: Showing concern can be incredibly helpful for those suffering from depression. According to psychologist Dr Yap Siew Ting, reaching out to someone who is suffering can encourage them to open up about their problems. However, if they do not wish to talk about it, a different approach may be necessary. Simply asking, ‘Are you alright?’ may result in the reply, ‘I am fine.’ In this case, Dr Yap recommends expressing your concern by acknowledging that you’ve noticed their difficulties. By doing so, the person will understand that someone cares about them. Dr Yap shared these insights at a talk organized by the Marang MCA division in Terengganu on Friday (July 14).

The talk, titled “Unveiling the Truth: A Comprehensive Look at Depression”, delved into the psychology of depression and was live streamed on the division’s Facebook page. Dr Yap, who holds a PhD in developmental psychology from Universiti Putra Malaysia, emphasized the importance of not dismissing the problems someone is facing or telling them to “get over it”. She also stressed that providing support depends on establishing personal trust and a strong relationship with the person in question.

In order to help someone suffering from depression, Dr Yap suggests showing concern, understanding their feelings, and encouraging them to seek professional help. It is crucial to have an understanding of what depression is so that appropriate support can be given. Dr Yap even recommends helping the person make an appointment and accompanying them to treatment. If that is not possible, listening attentively is more beneficial than dismissing their concerns. Being dismissive can make the person feel abandoned. During the talk, Dr Yap explained that while it is natural to experience a bad mood occasionally, persistent behaviors such as slowed speech or movements, sleep disturbances, loss of interest in favorite activities, and neglecting personal well-being could be symptoms of depression.

Dr Yap mentioned that available treatment options for depression include psychotherapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy), drug treatment, and brain stimulation therapies. However, she also stressed that showing support is just the first step and it is important to seek help from health professionals. The type of treatment required may vary between individuals.

Marang MCA division chief Monna Ong highlighted the significance of depression as a prevalent global mental health concern. Ong stated that depression affects individuals regardless of gender, age, occupation, or social status and can manifest at any point in a person’s life, causing significant distress. Depression also depletes the energy and vitality of those affected.
