The new director-general of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is Maritime Admiral Datuk Hamid Mohd Amin. He assumed the position on November 6th, taking over from Maritime Adm Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som, who retired in March.
Datuk Hamid, born on April 19, 1964, previously served as the MMEA’s deputy director-general (Operations). He had a long career in the Royal Malaysian Navy before joining the MMEA on October 31, 2005.
During his time in the Navy, Datuk Hamid gained extensive experience in conducting maritime operations and protecting the country from transborder crimes. In 2019, he held the position of Maritime Enforcement Division staff chief at Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).
Furthermore, in 2021, he was the director of the MMEA’s Enforcement and Coordination division before being appointed as deputy director-general in March. His expertise in strategic planning and asset deployment led to numerous successful high-profile arrests and prosecutions related to human trafficking and contraband smuggling.
Besides focusing on law enforcement, Datuk Hamid also prioritized improving maritime cooperation with fishermen and the wider maritime community to enhance security. His appointment as director-general is expected to enhance the MMEA’s asset capabilities and personnel competency while strengthening strategic cooperation with domestic and international enforcement agencies.
