SIBU: Julau MP Larry Sng has called for the intervention of Bukit Aman to restore law and order in the Julau and Pakan districts, which he claims are at risk of turning into the Wild West due to the activities of local gangsters.
In a Facebook post, Sng expressed concern that illegal activities by local gangsters were making life miserable for residents in the once-peaceful rural town.
He recounted an incident during his visit to the Chinese community in Julau, where he encountered local gangsters who he believed were looking to cause trouble. This led him to conclude that the town now resembles that of one in the Wild West.
Sng also alleged that online gaming had divided Sarawak’s cities and towns into territories controlled by various gangs, with illegal activities such as drug peddling, contraband sales, and illegal moneylending taking place in Julau.
According to Sng, the gangsters have forced local businesses to purchase their contraband items and have threatened those who resisted. He cited an instance where drugs were openly sold in Julau town as a demonstration of their impunity.
Furthermore, Sng claimed that public servants and longhouse chieftains had fallen into debt and were resorting to selling land and borrowing money at exorbitant interest rates from these gangsters.
He warned that unless the gangsters’ activities are dealt with decisively, Bukit Aman will need to take strong action against them.
