PETALING JAYA: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has rejected the proposal to increase the ceiling price of local white rice to RM3.40 per kg. This comes in response to a proposal made by Mydin’s managing director, Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, who suggested an increase in order to overcome a shortage in the supply. However, the ministry has stated that the regulated ceiling price for local white rice will remain at RM2.60 per kg. This is in accordance with the Rice (Price and Grade) Order 2008 and the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994.

In an earlier statement, Ameer Ali Mydin highlighted that increasing the price of local white rice to RM34 per 10kg would not only improve cost structures for producers but also help alleviate the shortage. However, the ministry remains firm in its decision to maintain the current price of RM2.60 per kg. The intention behind this decision is to stabilize the supply of local white rice and prevent bulk purchases by businesses and vendors.

The ministry has also clarified its permission for the purchase of imported white rice at a wholesale price of RM160 per 50kg. This permission is specifically granted to restaurant groups, food operators, and small vendors, with the aim of assisting them in obtaining imported rice at affordable prices for their businesses. The ministry emphasizes that this measure will help control operating costs and prevent an increase in the selling price of rice.

Furthermore, the ministry states that these measures have been taken to balance the demand for rice for both business purposes and household consumption during this period of high demand for local white rice supplies. The decision to allow the purchase of imported rice at wholesale prices was reached through consultations between the ministry and various stakeholders, including restaurant associations and small vendors.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has announced that the shortage of local white rice supply is expected to stabilize within a month. The government has implemented several intervention measures and continues to monitor the situation closely. Engagements with industry players have resulted in a commitment to implementing the Local White Rice Special Programme (PKBPT) nationwide.
