The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has stated that manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers who do not comply with regulations regarding the sale of certified padi seeds will face the revocation or suspension of their licenses.
In a statement released on Thursday (Aug 24), the Ministry emphasized that the director-general of the Padi and Rice Regulatory Division has the authority to revoke or suspend any issued license if the holder fails to adhere to the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 (Act 522).
The Ministry expressed its concern over the increasing prices and supply of padi seeds in the market and stressed that only government-appointed authorized padi suppliers are allowed to sell certified seeds.
“There are control mechanisms concerning the production and marketing of certified padi seeds outlined in the Standing Order of the Padi and Rice Regulatory director-general No. 1/2021: Government Control over Seed Production and Marketing, which has been effective since November 11, 2021,” stated the Ministry.
Therefore, manufacturers and wholesalers must ensure that the sale of certified padi seeds does not exceed the designated quota and that the selling price does not exceed the maximum allowed.
The maximum price for a 20kg sack of certified padi seeds is set at RM31 when purchased at the factory premises and a maximum of RM32 if transport charges are included.
The retail price for certified padi seeds should not exceed the set maximum of RM35 per 20kg sack, according to the Ministry. – Bernama
