KUALA LUMPUR: PAS central working committee member Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim assumed his position as the Kuala Terengganu MP in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Sept 5).
As stated in a media release by the Malaysian Parliament, the swearing-in ceremony was conducted in the Parliamentary Special Chamber, with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul presiding.
Ahmad Amzad, aged 53, took the oath of office after emerging victorious in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election held on August 12.
He secured the seat by defeating Harapan candidate Azan Ismail with a significant majority of 47,266 votes.
The by-election in Kuala Terengganu was necessitated by the decision of the Terengganu Election Court to nullify Ahmad Amzad’s victory in the 15th General Election as a result of corruption allegations during the campaign.
Congratulating Ahmad Azmad on his appointment and by-election win, Johari expressed hope that he will discharge his responsibilities with utmost dedication.
During the ceremony, Johari highlighted that the 15th Parliament session is notable for the extreme level of accountability of the executive body towards the legislature.
He attributed this to the effectiveness of the House, Special Chamber, and Special Select Committees of the Dewan Rakyat.
However, Johari emphasized that the increase in accountability must be accompanied by the compliance of Dewan Rakyat members with the sitting rules, particularly in terms of behavior.
“I urge honorable members to contribute fruitfully and significantly to the House, the public, and the nation. It is hoped that the members of the Dewan Rakyat will serve with dedication and excellence,” he added. – Bernama
