KUALA LUMPUR: The chairman of Felda, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, has expressed his readiness to assist the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in order to ensure the coalition’s victory in the Kemaman parliamentary by-election on Dec 2.
He mentioned that BN’s previous defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15) with a 27,000-vote majority does not present a significant obstacle for the coalition to clinch victory in the upcoming by-election due to changes in the political landscape.
Ahmad Shabery stated that voter support is subject to change, emphasizing that no party can assert dominance in specific constituencies.
He also highlighted the potential for shifting voter support, suggesting that by enlightening them about BN’s past performance in Kemaman, the coalition could sway voters with a strong track record.
During an interview on Bernama Radio, Ahmad Shabery denied the rumor circulating about his own candidacy for the by-election, stating that he believes he is too old to contest and that it would be more appropriate to field new faces.
The Kemaman by-election was prompted by the Terengganu Elections Court’s decision on Sept 26 to annul the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the GE15.
In the previous election, Che Alias secured 65,714 votes in a four-cornered battle, besting both the BN and PH candidates.
BN had previously held the parliamentary seat for three consecutive terms through Ahmad Shabery before his loss in GE14. – Bernama
