PUTRAJAYA: In an effort to monitor motorists’ behavior, the upgraded artificial intelligence (AI)-based violation detection cameras have been installed at selected traffic lights as a proof of concept, according to Anthony Loke, the Transport Minister. Loke confirmed that this system was implemented even before he assumed his position at the ministry. “I was made to understand that this is not new. It is a proof of concept,” he stated during a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters on Wednesday (July 12).
Loke made these remarks in response to a viral message suggesting that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had started a widespread project to install CCTV cameras with AI technology at traffic lights. The message warned people who are constantly using their phones while waiting for the green light that they may receive summonses. Loke emphasized the importance of sharing this information as a reminder that drivers are being watched through the CCTV.
Meanwhile, on July 4, Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced that the state had implemented an upgraded AI-based violation detection camera system at the Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection. The objective of this project is to collect evidence of offenses and gather data to assist in policy planning and enforcement action. “Within one week of its rollout, the project has shown impressive results,” said Lee. The trial period for this project is set to be six months, and the collected data will be presented to the state Transport Ministry to determine the next steps and actions.
The data collected from this AI-based system will be instrumental in planning effective enforcement action based on real-life scenarios, particularly in dealing with misbehaving drivers and accident-prone areas, added Lee.
