JOHOR BARU: Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail stated that Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) plays a crucial role in eliminating poverty in Malaysia. She mentioned that currently, there are 320,000 AIM Sahabat Usahawan, or micro-entrepreneurs, in the country. These micro-entrepreneurs are primarily single mothers from the B40 and B50 income groups, whose earnings are RM5,300 and below. Dr Wan Azizah acknowledged that AIM’s objectives are aligned with those of the unity government.
Dr Wan Azizah highlighted the personal significance of AIM, as it originated from the efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom she is married to. She commended his dedication to combating poverty in the nation and ensuring access to education for children. With Anwar Ibrahim now serving as Prime Minister, the fight against poverty has become his main agenda, exemplified by the growing number of registered Sahabat, which has reached over 320,000 individuals.
These remarks were made by Dr Wan Azizah during her speech at the AIM Rewang Merdeka Programme at Padang Kampung Pasir. Additionally, she mentioned that AIM has implemented a free tuition programme, benefitting 4,400 children of AIM Sahabat nationwide since July last year. Dr Wan Azizah encouraged all Sahabat to take advantage of this opportunity and enroll their children in the free programme. Furthermore, she stated that AIM will continue introducing programmes to benefit its members.
Aim was founded on September 17, 1987, as a private trust body incorporated under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act 1952 (Act 258).
