Malaysia’s 16th King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has been celebrated by the public for his friendly and approachable personality, and his genuine concern for the well-being of his people, since ascending to the federal throne in 2019.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, the former Comptroller of the Royal Household for Istana Negara, highlighted the inseparable bond between the Ruler and the people during Al-Sultan Abdullah’s reign. He spoke of the King’s hands-on involvement in helping his subjects during disasters like floods, fires, and accidents, often going to the affected areas himself and seeking external assistance to support affected families.

Ahmad Fadil, now the Malaysian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also shared stories of the King stopping his vehicle to help victims of road accidents and footing their medical bills, showing his authentic concern for the well-being of the people.

The King has also chosen not to receive any allowances, directing the funds to various essential matters, including the Covid-19 Fund, in a selfless manner. Ahmad Fadil noted that Al-Sultan Abdullah’s main concern during the Covid-19 outbreak was the safety and health of the people. He held weekly briefings and emphasised the importance of complying with SOP to avoid infection.

Beyond his warm demeanor, Al-Sultan Abdullah demonstrated his leadership qualities in steering the country’s economy and administration on the international stage, playing an essential role in strengthening Malaysia’s international relations and conducting state visits to other countries.

Al-Sultan Abdullah will complete his term as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 30, and the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, will begin his reign as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term, effective Jan 31. – Bernama
