All gantries in public transport stations managed by Prasarana are expected to have open payment system technology by August 2025, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Prasarana has been planning to implement this system across rail lines in the Klang Valley since early 2023. The rollout process is currently being finalized for the Kelana Jaya LRT line, Ampang LRT line, Kajang MRT line, Putrajaya MRT line, and monorail lines. The design and development phase will begin in March next year, and at least 50% of gantries at all stations will be equipped by February 2025. By August 2025, all gantries across the stations will have the open payment system.

Loke explained that the open payment system will allow the use of debit and credit cards as additional payment methods, in addition to existing methods such as Touch ‘n Go cards and tokens. He also mentioned the possibility of including QR payment methods in the next phase of implementation. Loke provided these details in response to a question by Wong Chen about the implementation of an open payment system for public transportation in the Klang Valley, particularly those managed by Prasarana.

Loke further informed the Parliament that the automatic fare collection system for KTM Berhad (KTMB) rails in the Klang Valley will be completed soon. By mid-November this year, scanners will be installed at all 57 KTMB stations in the Klang Valley. These scanners will support various payment methods, including credit and debit cards, Touch ‘n Go, and QR payments through the KTMB mobile application.

When asked about discounts for public transport users using open payment methods, Loke stated that the My50 monthly travel pass, offering unlimited travel for 30 days, is sufficient. He emphasized that the monthly pass is very affordable and is currently the cheapest monthly pass globally. The government plans to continue offering this pass in the next federal budget. Furthermore, Loke addressed the newly-introduced women’s coach on the Kajang MRT line, stating that official and auxiliary police have been deployed to ensure only females use these coaches. He mentioned that compliance with this policy has been high, as users voluntarily leave the coach once they realize it is designated for women. Loke clarified that the women’s coach is optional, and women can still use regular coaches if the women’s coach is crowded. He also mentioned the need to maintain a balance in coach allocation.

In response to Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir’s question regarding monitoring efforts for user compliance in women’s coaches and plans for expansion due to the increasing number of female riders, Loke said that the effectiveness of the current system, which designates one out of four coaches for women, will be studied.
