IPOH: Nga Kor Ming, the Housing and Local Government Minister, is calling for all Members of Parliament to support the amendment to the Federal Constitution. This amendment would grant Malaysian citizenship to children born to Malaysian mothers and foreign fathers. While only a two-thirds majority or 148 votes are needed for the amendment to pass, Nga hopes all 222 MPs will vote in favor of it.
The proposed constitutional amendment is set to be presented and read for the first time at the Dewan Rakyat on March 25th. Following this, it will be debated and put to a vote on March 27th.
Nga emphasized the importance of providing justice for stateless children, particularly those born to Malaysian mothers but in foreign countries. He made these remarks after attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall building on Saturday, March 23rd.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced last week that the Malaysian government will ensure the citizenship rights of children born abroad to Malaysian women and non-Malaysian fathers. Amendments to Article 14(1)(b) of the Federal Constitution, which addresses citizenship matters, will be brought to Parliament in the current month.
The proposed amendment seeks to replace the term “father” with “parents” or “mother,” a change that has been advocated for by affected Malaysian mothers, including the group Family Frontiers. Nga pointed out that if the amendment is approved, it will address approximately 2,000 cases, resolving the issues faced by Family Frontiers and promoting gender equality.
