In an article titled “Our duty to keep JB clean always,” Zazali Musa expresses agreement with the current state of Johor Baru city’s cleanliness. He believes that the city has a long way to go before it can be considered an international metropolis. Musa emphasizes the importance of maintaining cleanliness in Johor Baru as it is the first Malaysian city visitors encounter when entering the country via the Causeway. He believes that first impressions are crucial.
Aside from leaving a good impression on visitors, keeping the city clean also contributes to the comfort and well-being of its residents. Living and working in clean surroundings is preferred by all. The author shares his personal experience of recently moving to Taman Pelangi, a bustling suburb of Johor Baru. While the area may seem convenient due to its numerous eateries, mini markets, and shops within walking distance, he expresses disappointment with the lack of cleanliness along the streets.
One example of this is Jalan Sri Pelangi and the neighboring roads. The author describes seeing rubbish strewn carelessly on the roads and clogging up the drains near the shops. The overflowing rubbish bins further add to the uncleanliness of the area. Additionally, there is often a foul smell in the air, particularly on hot days. It is perplexing to the author that despite the unhygienic surroundings, there are many restaurants, cafes, and food stalls operating in the area.
To ensure the city remains clean, both the authorities and the residents must make an effort. The author suggests that the responsible parties prioritize activities such as rubbish collection and clearing littered roads over blowing leaves, which are harmless and natural. Shop owners also have a role to play in maintaining cleanliness by keeping their premises clean. Those who behave irresponsibly and contribute to the uncleanliness should be held accountable.
Lastly, the author believes that customers should have reasonable expectations regarding the cleanliness of the shops they frequent. Often, the lack of improvement is due to the lenient attitude displayed by customers who continue to support unhygienic eateries. The author concludes by expressing his hopes for an improvement in the cleanliness standards of Johor Baru.
