SEREMBAN: Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, the president of Amanah, is urging all parties in the unity government to focus on strengthening their individual parties rather than relying solely on the advantages of being in power to prepare for the next general election. Mohamad emphasized that party strength, not government positions, will determine victory in the election.
“Parties and government are different, because if we rely on the government to strengthen the party alone, it won’t work,” said Mohamad, using Umno and Barisan Nasional as examples of parties that were strong but still lost in recent General Elections when in power.
He went on to caution against assuming that being in government automatically makes a party strong, emphasizing the need for parties to maintain their own identity to move forward.
Mohamad also highlighted that previous losses in by-elections and general elections occurred while Pakatan Harapan was in power, highlighting the importance of giving attention to the party, despite having positions in the government. These comments were made during the opening of Negeri Sembilan Amanah’s 8th Convention in Seremban.
The Amanah National Leadership Committee elections for the 2023-2026 term will be held next week, with 124 candidates vying for 27 seats. This election will take place alongside the Amanah National Convention 2023 in Klang, Selangor, on December 23 and 24. Mohamad stated that he will leave it to the delegates to choose the desired candidates.
During his speech at the convention, Mohamad encouraged Pakatan Harapan to work closely with Umno in order to regain control of the four opposition-administered states: Kedah, Perlis, Terengganu, and Kelantan. He emphasized the need to enhance unity in order to potentially win several parliamentary seats in these four states.
Mohamad, who also holds the position of Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, noted that his ministry would assess the extent of crop damage due to flooding in the East Coast before providing assistance based on available financial resources.
