In Putrajaya, the Education Ministry has reiterated its commitment to enhancing the Secondary School Alternative Assessment (SSAA) for students with special needs to ensure they receive a high-quality and relevant education for both current and future requirements.

The ministry explained that SSAA is a unique form of assessment designed to evaluate the abilities and potential development of these students by tracking their capabilities and incapabilities. This evaluation is geared towards certifying their skills and capabilities through the granting of the Secondary School Alternative Certificate, rather than the conventional Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM).

“Our focus is on strengthening the education of special needs students through accreditation, motivation, and instilling confidence in them,” stated the ministry in a release on Monday.

The ministry expressed hope that special needs students graduating from school will possess fundamental skills that enable them to thrive in suitable work fields according to their abilities, ultimately contributing to the development of Malaysia Madani,”

Notably, parents or guardians of these students will have the ability to monitor their child’s educational progress across five key domains: spirituality and values; functional academics; personal and skill development; interpersonal and life competencies; and career development.

It was highlighted that the implementation of the SSAA underscores the ministry’s ongoing dedication to ensuring educational equity for all students, as outlined in the Malaysian Education Development Plan 2013-2025. This initiative also underscores the ministry’s commitment to providing inclusive education for all students.

The SSAA is accessible to all special needs students enrolled in educational institutions registered with the ministry, and it will be in place until all SSAA candidates reach the secondary school level. The assessment will utilize the Environment-based Assessment Instrument (EBAI) and the Alternative Assessment Standards Document to evaluate students effectively.
