An ambitious project is in the works to reinvigorate the coastal areas in Kota Kinabalu, aiming to balance economic tourism growth and environmental conservation. Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip stated that the masterplan is a crucial strategy focusing on improving coastal management infrastructure while taking advantage of the unique opportunities of Sabah’s state capital, famous for its sunsets.

The long-term coastal management plan and climate-resilient zoning take into consideration current and future climate risks, including policy measures, structural engineering, and nature-based solutions, according to Noorliza. Initiatives include a shift towards renewable energy, promoting cycling activity through existing lanes, and transforming streets into continuous public linkages.

Kota Kinabalu also plans to capitalize on its natural beauty, especially the picturesque sunsets, for tourism purposes, added Noorliza in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 27). The city hall organized the International Symposium on Developing and Managing Water’s Edge City, a gathering of government leaders, local authorities, and industry experts in December 2022, with the aim to delve into the sustainability challenges and opportunities associated with water’s edge cities, addressing issues such as the well-being of vulnerable communities and sharing integrated urban and environmental solutions.

Noorliza also mentioned that applicable mitigation and adaptation benefits have been identified, with strategic interventions being integrated into the Pelan Kota Kinabalu 2035 and the Kota Kinabalu City Hall’s Strategic Plan 2023-2026. These initiatives strengthen the regulatory framework and enhance the city’s ability to finance long-term bankable projects.

Recognizing the impact of climate change on urban sectors, including transportation, infrastructures, and natural resources, the Kota Kinabalu City Hall acknowledges the need for comprehensive action, Noorliza said.
