PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Annuar Musa, the chairman of Muafakat Nasional, has denied the claim that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim saved Umno from being deregistered by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Umno leaders are spreading false information to gain support for Anwar and DAP in the current situation,” said the former Umno secretary-general in a Facebook video interview with Suara TV.
“It doesn’t make sense that Anwar was the savior. If it were true, we would have signed statutory declarations (SDs) supporting him before the Sheraton Move,” he added.
“But instead, Umno initially signed the SDs to support Dr Mahathir and later Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the Prime Minister after the split in Pakatan Harapan,” he explained.
Annuar confirmed that he had spoken with Muhyiddin, Dr Mahathir, and former Selangor Barisan Nasional chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, all of whom denied any plans to deregister Umno.
“To me, this is just a last-minute attempt to portray Anwar as Umno’s savior and Muhyiddin as the villain,” Annuar added.
During a Jelajah Madani event in Guar Chempedak, Kedah on Saturday, Anwar revealed that Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin had planned to ban Umno after Pakatan came into power in 2018.
Anwar strongly opposed this idea and discussed it with other Pakatan components, who also disagreed, resulting in Bersatu canceling the plan.
Anwar mentioned these events to convince Umno members not to abandon the party and vote for Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming state elections.
He also stated that Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is being targeted by Perikatan because he refused to yield to their demands during Muhyiddin’s administration.
