The Sarawak Health Department has reported another death suspected to be caused by rabies, as the victim failed to seek medical treatment. According to Dr Ooi Choo Huck, the director of the department, it is believed that the victim contracted the disease while handling the carcass of a pet dog. This incident marks the fourth fatality reported between August and September 17 this year.
Out of the four cases, one occurred due to being scratched by a pet cat, while two were because of bites from pet dogs. Dr Ooi highlighted that none of the victims sought medical help at any healthcare facility after being bitten, scratched, or handling animal carcasses. He also mentioned that, this year, out of the 17 rabies cases recorded in the state between January 1 and September 17, 15 have resulted in death.
The breakdown of the 17 cases reported is as follows: five cases in Sibu division, four cases in Serian division, three cases in Kuching division, three cases in Bintulu division, and two cases in Samarahan division. Dr Ooi emphasized that this year’s total of 17 rabies cases reflects a significant increase of 70% compared to the same period last year when only 10 cases were reported.
Since the outbreak was declared in July 2017, a total of 72 human rabies cases, resulting in 65 deaths, have been reported in Sarawak, according to Dr Ooi. He advised the public to immediately seek treatment at the nearest health facility if they are bitten or scratched by a pet. Additionally, he urged the public not to handle the carcasses of animals with unknown infection status, including pets, and to report such cases to local authorities for appropriate handling.
