KUANTAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the need to empower Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country in order to produce better trained graduates. Anwar expressed dissatisfaction with the salary received by TVET graduates, which is generally below RM2,000, compared to their counterparts overseas who earn higher incomes. He cited Germany as an example where TVET graduates enjoy higher wages, stating that the target for salaries in Malaysia should be between RM2,500 and RM3,000 or even higher.
Anwar made these remarks during the “Meet Anwar” program held at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara on August 1. The program was attended by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Anwar highlighted that industry players, including Tesla Sdn Bhd, have voiced the need for improvements in TVET training and skills during discussions. He suggested that collaboration between TVET institutions and industry players, such as Proton and Geely, could be carried out at their respective locations to enhance the effectiveness of the TVET programs.
In response to a question from a TVET student about sponsorship abroad, Anwar stated that the government does not object to providing sponsorship for fields of study that are not available in the country. Additionally, Anwar announced a special allocation of RM5 million to improve TVET institution infrastructure in Pahang during the event, which received applause from the nearly 5,000 students in attendance.
Anwar also advised the younger generation to exercise caution when consuming information on social media, as it can be a source of misinformation. While acknowledging the importance and practicality of social media, Anwar emphasized the need to use it correctly and not be deceived by false information. He stressed the importance of reading, checking, and filtering information and warned against the belief that knowledge can be fully grasped in just minutes of scrolling through social media.
