Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently had a virtual meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to discuss the company’s investments in Malaysia. Anwar shared his enthusiasm for Tesla’s interest and investment decisions in the South-East Asian country. He also expressed his appreciation for Musk’s willingness to visit Malaysia. The meeting lasted around 25 minutes and a statement was issued by Anwar on Friday.

During the meeting, Anwar and Musk had a discussion about Starlink and its potential to expand Internet coverage in rural areas. This highlights the acknowledgment of Malaysia’s need for improved connectivity and technology in various regions.

Exciting news for Malaysian Tesla enthusiasts, as the company is all set to launch its lineup in the country on July 20. Pre-booking for the Model Y range has already commenced, starting at RM199,000 (US$44,000). According to Tesla’s website, deliveries will begin next year. This marks a significant step forward in Malaysia’s efforts to develop an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

Malaysia is actively focused on promoting the growth of EVs and has implemented tax incentives to encourage adoption. The country aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and has set a target of having EVs, including hybrids, account for 15% of the total industry volume by 2030. Undoubtedly, Tesla’s entry into the Malaysian market will contribute to reaching this goal.

Tesla has previously announced plans to establish a network of superchargers across Malaysia, enabling EV owners to conveniently recharge their vehicles. In addition to Tesla, China’s renowned EV brand, BYD Co, has also expressed its intention to sell its EVs in Malaysia. This indicates a growing interest and confidence in the Malaysian market among prominent EV manufacturers.
