Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of allowing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate anyone, regardless of their position. He warned that if the commission is seen to only target “small fishes” for corruption offences, it would face criticism.
Anwar stressed that it is crucial to avoid the perception that influential individuals are protected or above the law. He urged for a probe into individuals who have amassed extraordinary wealth, stating that leaders should not be viewed as protecting the corrupt.
Addressing reporters at the Kota Damansara mosque after Friday prayers, Anwar mentioned the seizure of Menara Ilham, which is owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. He urged the public to refrain from speculating and emphasized the need for MACC to carry out investigations without fear, even if it involves influential leaders.
Anwar emphasized the need for the process to take place and for the judiciary to decide, regardless of the claims made against influential individuals. He emphasized that the system should take brave action and not be seen as representing a broken system.
Following reports that the MACC seized Menara Ilham under Section 38(1) of the MACC Act, Anwar reiterated the importance of the investigation, stating that the anti-graft agency seized the tower after finding an offence under the MACC Act 2009.
