The government is exploring strategies to attract skilled Malaysians back to the country to address the ongoing issue of brain drain, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister. Anwar mentioned that several ministries, including the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI), the Economy Ministry, and the Higher Education Ministry, are actively engaging with individuals who can make valuable contributions to Malaysia. He emphasized the importance of creating a system that incentivizes top scholars, economists, and accountants to return. Anwar shared these remarks during a dinner with Malaysian diaspora and students in New York on September 23.
Anwar arrived in the city last Wednesday after delivering Malaysia’s National Statement at the 78th United Nations General Assembly. He also mentioned that the government has established a committee to review the salary scheme of public servants. However, any changes to the structure should align with the country’s financial position. Anwar highlighted the significant debt and deficit inherited by the current government and emphasized the need for responsible economic policies to gradually reduce these figures.
Regarding the question of dual citizenship, Anwar stated that further discussion is required to assess the implications of its implementation. He explained that the Foreign Minister and Home Minister will prepare a paper to examine the potential effects of allowing dual citizenship. While the government is not currently in favor of this policy, they are open to considering adjustments due to requests from Malaysian professionals abroad who wish to contribute to the country’s development without having to choose between their homeland and adopted countries.
