KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed that his admiration for renowned scholar Sheikh Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi does not make him biased. Anwar revealed that Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s analysis of various aspects, such as moderation in thinking, actions, and understanding, has greatly influenced his life. The Islamic scholar’s ability to draw knowledge from the past and apply it to the present has intrigued Anwar. He shared these thoughts during the launch of Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s autobiography titled “Syeikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Sebuah Autobiografi: Sang Pelita Umat” on July 11. The event was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, and Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s son Dr. Mohammad Al-Qaradawi.
Anwar highlighted Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s famous book, “Fiqh Az-Zakat” (Jurisprudence of Zakat), which is considered a comprehensive work that covers every aspect of zakat (tithe) in great detail. According to Anwar, the book emphasizes the importance of zakat as a cornerstone institution that helps the poor and needy, while also addressing the significance of good governance and economic management in combatting poverty. He praised Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s ability to captivate young people with his analyses, inspiring them to bring about positive change.
Anwar also shared a personal anecdote about how Sheikh Al-Qaradawi supported him and his family during difficult times. Despite being an intellectual giant in the world of knowledge, Sheikh Al-Qaradawi considered them as friends and sought their guidance on certain matters. His care and concern for Anwar’s family were unwavering, making him a pillar of strength in their lives.
The autobiography “Syeikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Sebuah Autobiografi: Sang Pelita Umat” provides insights into the life of Sheikh Al-Qaradawi, from his early childhood Quranic studies to his post-graduate studies. Throughout his life, Sheikh Al-Qaradawi authored over 120 books on various topics, including Islamic jurisprudence, and received numerous international prizes for his contributions to the Islamic world. In recognition of his achievements, the Government of Malaysia awarded him the Tokoh Maal Hijrah Award in 2009. Sheikh Al-Qaradawi passed away on September 26, 2022, at the age of 96. – Bernama
