Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterates that all parties should respect the Pardons Board’s decision to commute Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s sentence, according to Prime Minister. The Prime Minister stated that the decision to reduce Najib’s sentence was not solely based on the law, but rather on the prerogative of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The Pardons Board previously announced that the jail term of convicted former prime minister Najib has been reduced from 12 years to six. As a result, Najib’s release date will be on Aug 23, 2028. Additionally, the fine imposed on him has been reduced to RM50mil from RM210mil. However, if the fine is not paid, a year will be added to the jail term, resulting in a release date of Aug 23, 2029, according to the Pardons Board secretariat.
Najib is currently serving a 12-year sentence after being found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering in relation to RM42mil that had been siphoned from SRC International, a former 1MBD subsidiary. He was also fined RM210mil. Furthermore, the former prime minister is on trial for other charges related to 1MDB.
