KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged voters in the upcoming state elections to reject politicians who engage in corruption and mistreat the people.

The chairman of the Pakatan Harapan coalition emphasized that he has never awarded government contracts to himself or provided special allowances to his wife or children during his tenure as the country’s premier.

“If I betray the people, reject me. If I fail to take care of the Malays, reject me. If I misuse the people’s money or seize their land, then reject me,” Anwar stated during his speech at the ‘Kita Hulu Kelang with PMX’ event in Taman Keramat on Friday (July 21).

Anwar also criticized opposition leaders, including those from an Islamic-based party, for campaigning using disrespectful tactics and ridiculing him.

The people will evaluate these negative behaviors by the politicians during the state elections on August 12, he added.

“Although insults are being hurled at me by the opposition, it will not deter the unity government from continuing its efforts to assist the people and develop the country,” Anwar asserted.

He further emphasized that the state elections should be a platform for politicians to discuss economic planning and matters pertaining to the welfare of the people, rather than engaging in insult-filled debates.

Anwar acknowledged that the opposition had chosen to target him during their campaign, but he noted that his experiences with PAS leaders under the late Tan Sri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and late Datuk Fadzil Noor were different, as he did not face personal insults from them.

As the Member of Parliament for Tambun, Anwar expressed his hope that voters in the upcoming state elections would support candidates from the Pakatan and Barisan Nasional unity government, in order to reject destructive politics promoted by the opposition.

“A clear message must be sent to the opposition that such politics can no longer be tolerated, with the support of the voters in Hulu Kelang and Selangor,” he urged.

The event was also attended by Selangor caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Selangor Umno chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.

Meanwhile, Megat Zulkarnain revealed that Umno had decided to forego its incumbent Hulu Bernam seat in order to streamline and coordinate the unity government’s seats in the Selangor polls.

He acknowledged that party members initially wished to defend the Hulu Bernam seat, but he stressed the importance of making small adjustments to adapt to the current political situation.

“This is not because the seat lacks potential for victory since Barisan has never lost in the state assembly. However, we have negotiated and agreed to contest in Batang Kali, while Pakatan will vie for the Hulu Bernam seat,” Megat Zulkarnain explained.

Megat Zulkarnain is one of Barisan’s 12 candidates contesting in Selangor, running for the Gombak Setia constituency.
