The Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) has announced that it will no longer apply to join Barisan Nasional (BN) as a component party due to a lack of political will from BN. This decision was made unanimously by the party leadership and grassroots members, as stated by Kimma President Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Kader during the party’s general assembly on September 2nd. Syed Ibrahim mentioned that the only exception to this decision would be if Barisan extends an invitation to Kimma.
According to Syed Ibrahim, Kimma’s applications to join BN were consistently rejected with the reason being Barisan’s failure to reach a consensus on the matter. He expressed his uncertainty about how long Kimma could continue waiting for an answer, thus leading to the decision to no longer submit any application to join BN as a component party. However, if Barisan extends an invitation, Kimma will accept it. The decision was finalized by the supreme council with loud cheers from the members.
Following the decision, Kimma has decided to focus on strengthening its position as an Umno affiliate party. However, there has been no clear indication that Kimma is fully accepted by Umno at state, division, and branch levels. Syed Ibrahim urged Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to make an inclusive decision that would prevent Kimma from struggling on its own. He emphasized the importance of Umno’s support and compared the Indian Muslim community to a ball being kicked around, requesting support for education opportunities and representation in the government.
