Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said expressed her approval of the appointment of Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh as the new Attorney General, starting on Sept 6. According to Azalina, Ahmad Terrirudin’s selection was the right one as he currently holds the position of the Solicitor General, making him the second highest ranking official in the Attorney General’s office. Azalina commended the internal appointment, emphasizing the chambers’ legal expertise and representation of the country’s legal sector. She also expressed hope that Ahmad Terrirudin would build on the progress of former attorney general Tan Sri Idrus Harun and the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) as a whole.
Azalina also addressed the issue of leaked internal memo documents from the AGC. In response to claims made by UMNO Youth, she stated that the matter would be investigated by the relevant agency, whether it be the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). She urged UMNO Youth to lodge a report if they wished to pursue the issue further.
Ahmad Terrirudin, a law graduate from Universiti Malaya, has been a part of the judicial and legal service since 1995. His previous postings include senior assistant registrar of the High Court of Malaya, magistrate in Sibu, sessions court judge in Kuala Lumpur, and special officer to the chief justice of the Federal Court.
An alleged leaked memorandum that surfaced online has been another point of controversy. The memo, supposedly sent by lead prosecutor Datuk Jamil Aripin to former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, pertains to the grounds of the AGC’s decision on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s final appeal in the SRC International corruption case. It stated that the available evidence against Najib and former treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah was deemed “grossly insufficient” to prove a prima facie case for the six charges.
