JAKARTA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) stated that despite differing opinions, Asean will continue to adhere to its principle of centrality and neutrality to maintain regional stability.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the regional body firmly believes in the importance of maintaining centrality, peace, and neutrality within the region.
“What is crucial is that Asean countries reach consensus, even though some may have varying preferences. However, as Asean, we remain committed to neutrality,” he told reporters at the end of his visit to attend the 43rd Asean Summit and other related summits on Thursday (Sept 7).
Anwar emphasized that this is the reason why major world powers, even those with differences, such as the United States, Russia, China, and India, were allowed to participate in the summit.
“We give them the opportunity to express their views despite their significant differences, including between the US and Russia or the US and China,” he added.
“We believe that this forum should be used for engagement rather than debates,” he further explained.
Regarding economic cooperation, Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, expressed his satisfaction with the positive developments resulting from the Asean summit.
“Economic cooperation has become the highlight, whereby China has prepared additional funds,” he noted.
“The US has announced the establishment of the US-Asean Centre in Washington D.C.,” he continued.
“Australia has also provided funding for the digital sector, while India has announced special assistance in various sectors,” he said.
“Therefore, I see numerous positive developments, as concrete measures are being taken to expedite investments,” concluded Anwar.
