A Public Works Department (JKR) assistant engineer in Shah Alam has been fined RM80,000 by the Sessions Court for accepting a bribe of RM10,000 from the site supervisor of a construction company. Judge Datuk Anita Harun handed down the fine, in default of 12 months in jail, to 36-year-old Zabidi Zahari after he pleaded guilty to two alternative charges on Friday (July 28).
The charges alleged that Zabidi, who is based at the JKR office in Hulu Langat, received RM10,000 from the site supervisor at a restaurant in Bandar Baru Bangi around 4pm on May 17, last year. He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, as a public servant, for obtaining valuable things without consideration from a person known to have a connection with his official functions.
Deputy public prosecutor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Muaz Ahmad Khairuddin, prosecuted the case, while lawyer Mohd Baharuddin Ahmad Kassim represented Zabidi, who is married with three children.
According to the facts presented in court, Zabidi allegedly requested RM80,000 from the site supervisor to expedite the invoice payment process for repair works at SMK Cheras Perdana. The supervisor then filed a complaint with the MACC, which subsequently set a trap after Zabidi agreed to accept RM10,000.
